This was a group project with Abby Fox, Alexa Inch and Katie Arnold-Kelly.
A manifestation of verse 2 in the waiata 'Waewae taku haere' composed by Kura Moeahu in 2018.
Manini (Kaiarataki)
Manini atu ki Waipapa
Hōkio iho ki te Akautangi
Rukuruku au kia wawe taku tai, ko Te Awa-a-Taia
Manini atu ki Waipapa
Hōkio iho ki te Akautangi
Rukuruku au kia wawe taku tai, ko Te Awa-a-Taia
The Manini verse begins at the top of the Waipapa Stream in Hataitai and descends down to Evan’s Bay, Akautangi. We are reflecting the co-existing and knotted layers of past, present, future and mourning what once was the Waipapa stream descending into Te Awa-a-Taia.
Wai is about channeling the energy all around us and creating a unique journey for the user to uncover what’s invisible, whilst still seeing what’s currently visible. While being immersed in Wai the user will become the piped Waipapa Stream, feeling the tension and experiencing the mourning of the free flowing Waipapa current and Te Awa-a-Taia which used to be the body of water where the suburbs of Lyall Bay and Kilbirnie now lie. Paired with the linear layout of varying fabric transparencies, reflecting the layers of time and whakapapa there will be moments the user is guided to open areas. These spaces act as a release of tension that comes with the descending flow, as well as being a beacon of hope for the energy of the Waipapa to be free once again.
A performative installation.
